At first look, these appear to be dresses, but they are much more than just a dress. Meet the huipil (the “h” is silent and it rhymes with people). Say it out loud. It’s both a fun and important word to us here at El Shoppo because it’s the appropriate word for these paneled tunics worn by indigenous Central Americans, namely Mayans and Zapotecs, dating back to the pre-Hispanic era. We are also proud that each of our huipiles is hand-woven by the same Central American artisans who have woven and worn them for generations.
And, there’s a reason these hand-woven cotton designs have stood the test of time. Whether worn as a blouse or dress, the garment flatters all body types and is chic enough for any occasion. Bonus: It won’t wrinkle in your suitcase or take up too much room because it folds up into the most satisfyingly perfect rectangle.
